ASSET Webinar: Meet & Learn #Timber Loops

Working towards a circular economy starts with so-called ‘material hubs’: facilities that collect, store, process, and redistribute materials on a small urban scale. But how can cities decide on an ideal amount of material hubs and the size of the areas in which they operate? Our next speaker, Tanya Tsui, tackled this question in the Amsterdam context for her project Timber Loops. Don’t hesitate to join the webinar!

Amsterdam aims to reuse 50% of its construction materials in new construction by 2030. The main challenge lies in optimizing the waste-to-resource loops: finding the optimal scale and location for circular construction hubs – important facilities for processing construction waste into secondary materials. Using spatial optimization, Tanya’s project balanced the trade-off between small and large-scale hubs from a cost and emissions perspective. Her team found that the optimal number of hubs for our study area is 29, with an average service radius of 3 km.

Birgit Hopff will further provide her reflection on the study based on her experience from circular hubs in the province of South Holland which have strong focus on area development and circular economy.
